Possibility Of, But Not The Poetry Of

I could’ve fallen in love with you
Whispered the possibility in my mind
Of “us” and “we”
Instead of just me

All the pieces were there for love
Parts shifting to fit together
You inside my open spaces
My heart widening to this

We floundered before we flew
Faltered before I could meld to you
It’s not quite sadness
Not quite regret I feel

It’s our almost, our possible
The possibility to have you
Be held with tenderness
See love, feel it in a caress

Maybe it’s for the best
Maybe I’m better in the end
But the slight ache in that open spot
Tells me I still miss our possible love
